The Wash-Up – GDFL Round 6

WINNERS

GDFL Scoreboard – Round 6

“THE” RESULT

A late goal from Matt Sprigg ensures Winchelsea head into the interleague break with an imposing 5-1 win-loss record. Leading by 30 points at the final change, the Blues surrendered the lead at the 18-minute mark after four consecutive Werribee Centrals’ goals. However, Sprigg stepped up to play the hero and get Winch home.

THE TALKING POINT

Geelong West had their chances to beat Bell Post Hill for the first time since 2001, including a Brayden Mitchell set shot in the final couple of minutes that went out on the full. Only a game out of the top five, the Giants are still in the finals mix.

BIG WINNER

Inverleigh made light work of fellow premiership contender Thomson. After an even first term, the Hawks turned the match on its head with a 5.7 to 0.3 second quarter.

BIG LOSER.

Leading by 39 points at quarter time after kicking with the breeze in the opening term, Anakie appeared well placed for their first win of the season. However, Belmont Lions hit back with seven goals in the second term, before banging on six goals into the wind.

THE KEY NUMBER

Five. The number of consecutive wins by Winchelsea. It’s the first time the Blues have strung that many victories together since their streak in the middle of the 2014 season (Round 7-11). For those hoping for omens, Winch played finals that year.

REPORTABLE

Belmont Lions duo Tyler Jones and Jack Baker were both reported during the win over Anakie. Jones has accepted the umpires’ offer of a one-week suspension, while Baker is likely to challenge his one-week ban at the AFL Barwon Tribunal if the Match Review Panel agrees with the charge. Roo Luke McConachy has taken the two weeks for his report.
