The Wash-Up – GDFL Round 5

WINNERS

GDFL SCOREBOARD – ROUND 5

“THE” RESULT

Geelong West trailed at every change, including 18 points at three-quarter time, before storming home to share the points with Winchelsea. The Giants kicked 6.2 to 3.2 in the final term to provide the region with its first senior draw of 2019. For West, discounting the weather-affected result of early 2017 against Bell Post Hill, it was their first draw since Round 2, 2008, also against the Panthers. The Blues most recently played a draw in Round 16, 2017, against East Geelong.

FINALS A RACE IN SEVEN?

As we head into the interleague break, it is hard to see any of East Geelong, Anakie, Bell Post Hill, Belmont Lions or Corio playing finals. The Eagles are only a game outside the top five but are probably a year away. One should know better than to write off the Panthers, but with Thomson to follow after the week off, it will be a long way back from 1-5.

PANTHERS ON THE BOARD

The monkey is off the back for Bell Post Hill, with first-year co-coaches Caleb Bacely and Justin Tarr celebrating their first win after the Panthers held off Belmont Lions for a 19-point win at Myers Reserve. “I don’t know what it was like externally, but the pressure was building a bit inside the club,” Bacely told The Wash-Up. “(It’s) really good to get the first win and (you) definitely pull up a lot better on a Sunday after a win.”

SQUIZZY BACK IN ACTION

Comeback or filling in? We suspect it’s the latter for Thomson assistant coach Brent Taylor, who pulled on the boots for the Tigers in Saturday’s reserve grade win over Anakie. ‘Squizzy’ also made three appearances at 12 o’clock in 2018.
