The Wash-Up – GDFL Round 2

WINNERS

GDFL SCOREBOARD – ROUND 2

“THE” RESULT

Can we start talking about Thomson as a legitimate premiership threat with their 10-point win over Bell Post Hill? The Tigers snapped an 11-match losing streak against the Panthers to remain one of only three unbeaten teams after Round 2. He might by 37, but Adam Wiseman may prove to be the recruit of the season.

THE TALKING POINT

The gap between the ‘Big 3’ and the rest of the competition appears to be closing. While Thomson getting the points over Bell Post Hill was the key result, Werribee Centrals were competitive at times against a Jak Kennedy Hunt-less Inverleigh, while Geelong West held the lead over Bannockburn at half time and were within a kick at the final change before fading in the last.

BIG WINNER

We could wax lyrical about Thomson again, but we won’t. East Geelong deserve some plaudits for the way they bounced back from the opening round loss to Werribee Centrals. Many suspected, based on Belmont Lions solid effort against Bell Post Hill in Round 1, that the Eagles would have their hands full at Winter Reserve. However, Jeremy Power’s men got an early lead and never looked back to regain the Mark Lomas Shield.

BIG LOSER

Anakie already find themselves behind the eight-ball after two rounds after being handed a 92-point hiding by Winchelsea. With Bannockburn and North Geelong to come in the next fortnight, the Roos could find themselves winless after the opening month of the season.

THE KEY NUMBER

0. The number of goals Anakie kicked in the second half against Winchelsea. The absence of 2015 Whitley medallist Jamie Pitman didn’t help, but there are some worrying signs for coach Chris Moore just a fortnight into the season.
