The Wash-Up – GDFL Round 17

WINNERS

GDFL SCOREBOARD – ROUND 17

“THE” RESULT

Geelong West scored its first win over Bell Post Hill since Round 2, 2001, and just the Giants/Cheetahs sixth since the return to a single division in 1996, when it overcame a 20-point three-quarter time deficit. West kicked six goals to two in the final quarter to snatch a four-point win. The Giants now only need to beat East Geelong to confirm a first finals berth since 1997.

THE TALKING POINT

Inverleigh reconfirmed its premiership favouritism by putting away Thomson to the tune of 38 points. After conceding the opening goal of the contest, the Hawks kicked the next three majors either side of quarter time to put the Tigers at arm’s length and ensure they start the finals with the week off.

BIG WINNER

Werribee Centrals moved back into the top five for the first time since Round 5 thanks to a 27-point win over fellow finals aspirant Winchelsea. The Centurions’ win has turned the final round clash with Bannockburn into a virtual elimination final. Beat the Tigers, and Centrals will take on Geelong West in the first weeks of the finals. Lose, and surrender their spot to Bannockburn.

THE KEY NUMBER

9. The number of games Geelong West has been involved that have been decided by eight points or less. The Giants have been on the right side of the ledger in six occasions.

SOCIAL

And they did it again! Rolling the top quality bell post hill panthers! A final quarter come back from behind win. Amazing belief by this team.
