The Wash-Up – GDFL Round 17

WINNERS
“THE” RESULT
Werribee Centrals will start its first finals series since 2013 from the qualifying final after spoiling Ryan Garrard’s 200th game celebrations with a 44-point win over Inverleigh. With no disrespect to Corio, the Centurions will beat the winless Devils and play Bannockburn the following week. Centrals’ win came on a massive day for the club, which celebrated its 50th anniversary at a gala function on Saturday night. “We’ve been starved of finals success for too long,” coach Nick Smith said. “As a past player, I’m made well aware of that by anyone that I run into at the club. It was good to celebrate 50 years. They named five different teams of the decade and recognised some hall of famers. It was a great night to be part of.”
“BITTERSWEET” WIN FOR ROOS
Anakie co-coach Chris Moore has labelled his team’s victory over Winchelsea as “bittersweet”. It was the Roos’ fifth win in seven rounds and turned around a 72-point loss to the Blues in Round 6. Moore says it’s one of the better wins during his tenure at Anakie. “Winchelsea were treating it as a final, so the message to our boys was to treat it the same,” Moore said. “We expected them to come out hot early, and they did. But we were able to steady and it was good to be able to do it for four quarters.” Anakie will be looking to take another scalp when it travels across to Bannockburn to round out season 2019. For the Blues, they need to upset Thomson or risk losing fifth spot to East Geelong, which meets Bell Post Hill.
MITCH MAKES CERTAIN OF GOAL KICKING TITLE
North Geelong’s Mitch Habib will win this year’s GDFL goal kicking award after extended his break on the rest of the field to 18 on the back of a nine-goal haul in the Magpies’ 148-point hiding of Corio. Habib has feasted on the Devils this year. He kicked 12 majors when the two teams met back in Round 6. East Geelong’s Jack Elliott is next best on 48, while Bannockburn’s Brent Jacques (46) and Winchelsea’s Will Ford (45) are also a chance of cracking 50.
