WINNERS

GDFL SCOREBOARD – ROUND 16

“THE” RESULT

Inverleigh overcame a dogged North Geelong to ensure next week’s clash with Werribee Centrals will act as a double-chance qualifier. Leading by just five points at three-quarter time, the Hawks, who were without playing coach Adam Donohue, slammed on six goals to none to claim a 42-point win. Inverleigh maintained its one-game buffer on the fourth-placed Centrals with the result. However, the Hawks percentage is just over seven points less than the Centurions. Donohue confirmed he will return for what will be the match of Round 17. “I can’t wait; I’m feeling really refreshed, which is good,” he told K rock’s The Wash-Up. “I thought it was a good chance to have a bit of a spell, which I haven’t had this year, and I’ve been a little bit sore.” However, Casey Meehan won’t be back from overseas until the first week of the finals.

CENTURIONS MAKE IT OFFICIAL

Werribee Centrals will return to St Albans Reserve for the first time since 2013 after locking away a finals berth with a 33-point win over East Geelong. The Centurions overcame some early inaccuracy and a plucky Eagles outfit, who were playing for their season, to claim their 11th win and ensure next week’s clash with Inverleigh will decide who plays Bannockburn in the qualifying final.

LIONS OVERCOME PANTHER HOODOO

Belmont Lions 33-point win over Bell Post Hill was its first win over the Panthers since its lone premiership of 2007. The victory snapped a run of 18-straight wins by the men from Myers Reserve. “It’s been a long time coming,” caretake coach Lachie Edwards said. “It was a battle all day and it came down to the last 30 minutes and who really wanted. We had great support with the crowd that we had. We probably haven’t seen that for a long time.”
