The Wash-Up – GDFL Round 14
- Updated: July 21, 2019

WINNERS
“THE” RESULT
Winchelsea ensured its six-point buffer inside the top five was maintained with its second win of the season over Inverleigh. The Blues were able to put the Hawks at arm’s length with a 4.2 to 0.3 second quarter to claim their eighth win of 2019. Coach Brendan Forssman told K rock’s The Wash-Up admits it was an important win. “It certainly helps to put a little bit of a gap on the team’s below us,” he said. “But, as we said to the boys this week, the focus for the last five weeks is (that our) destiny is in our own hands. We’re in the position where teams have still got to catch us to get into that fifth spot. The most pleasing aspect about yesterday was that we’re not relying on other teams now to lose. We’ve just got to make sure we do the right thing and win the games that come up in front of us.” Kyle Brookes played his best game since joining the Blues at the start of 2018, Will Ford booted five goals in another mature performance, and Jackson Smith played was impressive in just his fourth game back from overseas.
TIGERS “GET OUT OF JAIL”
Coach Peter Riccardi was breathing a sigh of relief after a late Brent Jacques goal helped Bannockburn stay in the box seat to claim a double-chance following a five-point win over East Geelong at Victoria Park. “We used our ‘Get out of Jail Free’ card,” he admitted. “To East Geelong’s credit, they just don’t go away. Looking at their results throughout the year, they don’t win by much, but they don’t lose by much. They’re always in the game and give themselves every chance throughout the game. You look at the scoring shots, they had five more than us. We were very lucky in the end.” The victory did come at a cost for the Tigers, with Michael Stevenson and Nathan Kelly both expected to miss a couple of weeks with hamstring issues, while star forward Tom Gillies has a calf issue he carried for most of the game after kicking three goals in the first quarter.
DEVILS BLUSHES SPARED
Corio has narrowly avoided being held scoreless for the second time in three weeks after finding two final quarter goals in the 212-point loss to Anakie. The Devils, who didn’t trouble the scorers against Thomson in Round 12, were headed for a similar fate at three-quarter time. However, Brian Devlin and Chris Laurie ensured Corio had something to show for its effort. Anakie’s score of 34.22 (226) was its highest score and biggest win since kicking 41.12 (258) in a 221-point win over Geelong West at Bakers Oval in Round 7, 2003.
