GDFL SCOREBOARD – FINALS WEEK 1

SECOND SEMI-FINAL TO BE AN ALL-TIGER AFFAIR

Bannockburn has held off Werribee Centrals with a thrilling five-point win at St Albans Reserve to put itself one win away from a first grand final appearance since 2016. The Tigers will take on reigning premier Thomson for the first place in the decider. Bannockburn coach Peter Riccardi wasted no time turning his attention to Thomson, which won the only clash between the two teams in the home-and-away season by 16 points in Round 9 at Victoria Park. However, Riccardi says there are some areas the Tigers will need to tidy up from late in the win over the Centurions. “There were a couple of stoppages in the last bit of the last quarter that I didn’t like,” he told K rock’s The Wash-Up. “So we turned our attention on that straight away. Werribee had a shot at goal with three seconds to go. The ball was in the air. If they had of scored the goal, ecstasy could have turned to agony if that had of went through. There are still things we can improve on and do a lot better.”

SEASON OVER FOR HAWK

Jake Templeton has become the latest Inverleigh player to be ruled out for the season after damaging ankle ligaments at training on Thursday night. “It was the very last thing he was doing in his fitness test and he stood on someone’s foot and it’s a six-week ankle injury,” coach Adam Donohue confirmed. He joins Daniel Grozdanovski (fractured scaphoid) in having his year ended earlier than hoped.

RECRUIT NAMED TOP MAGPIE, LEAMER GOES BACK-TO-BACK

Off-season acquisition James Vanderkley has claimed the North Geelong best-and-fairest. Vanderkley, who joined the Magpies from North Ballarat City, was able to hold on to beat Lachie Hayes despite missing the final two rounds. At Geelong West, Michael Leamer claimed the Giants best-and-fairest for the second straight year. He finished ahead of Curtis Hoare and captain Scott Jervies.
