ADAM Wiseman was due to undergo surgery on Thursday night in a Melbourne hospital after suffering damage to three fingers in a workplace accident in Colac.

The veteran Thomson defender, who works as a roofer, fell from scaffolding on Thursday morning and was initially treated at Colac Hospital.

Wiseman was then transferred to Geelong and then to the Epworth in Melbourne.

Tigers coach Reece Holwell confirmed on Thursday night following team selection at Godfrey Street that the 39-year-old won’t play against Bannockburn in Sunday’s GDFL Grand Final.

He says he was “shattered” at the news.

“I was worried about his safety, and then you start thinking it does affect footy,” Holwell said.

“I’m glad that he’s still got his fingers intact. He could have fallen straight through the beam that was holding him up and seriously hurt himself.

“First and foremost, it was all about his safety, and then the footy side came into it.

“I’m glad he’s OK.”

2018 finals hero Ethan Solly, who has been limited to just three senior matches this year, will take Wiseman’s spot.

“The way he attacks the footy, that’s something no one else brings at our club,” Holwell said.

“That holds him in good stead this weekend.”

Holwell is confident the hole Wiseman will leave can be covered.

“(Paul) Davis, he can play as a tall back,” Holwell said. “We’ve put him back when ‘Wisey’ wasn’t playing as well.

“The first time we played Bannockburn, Wiseman didn’t play.

“We’ve got different options there.”

Holwell also confirmed Josh Westwood would return from a minor hamstring issue, with Brady Johnson the unlucky player making way from the second semi-final team.

Johnson was told earlier this week he wouldn’t be playing in the senior match.

“Brady’s a great young kid with a really bright future,” Holwell said.

“It wasn’t an easy decision, but we wanted to tell him early in the week so that he could focus on being able to play in the reserves on Sunday.”
