NATHAN Mayes will be sidelined for the remainder of the season with the Inverleigh forward to undergo surgery to fix an ongoing shoulder issue.

Coach Adam Donohue confirmed Mayes, who kicked 51 goals and was a member of the GDFL Team of the Year in 2018, won’t play again in 2019 after managing just one game in the seniors and one in the reserves

“We brought him in against Winch (in Round 5) because we had a few out, and it popped out three or four times during the game,” Donohue said.

“He went in (to the doctors) and got the results back that he needs an operation.

“It’s a pretty big loss for us.”

Donohue is also unsure whether they will see former Modewarre, Anglesea and East Geelong forward Josh Bouwman this year.

“If it gets to halfway or three-quarters of the way through the year, it’s nearly too late,” Donohue said.

“I’ll need to have a chat with him about it in the next couple of weeks.

“I haven’t got an update on him, but he said he had another setback.”

Co-captain Ryan Garrard will miss this week’s meeting with Bell Post Hill, but, in better news, veteran defender Justin DiBlasio is back training after suffering a knee injury in the Anzac Day win over Bannockburn.

The Hawks will start red-hot favourites against an injury-hit Panther outfit, but Donohue says they can’t take the modern-day powerhouse lightly.

“You never write them off,” he said. “I know they’ve got a few injuries and stuff, but watching the East Geelong game they were fairly competitive for a long part of the game.

“They probably ran out of legs and talent on the park with their injuries.

“We know they’re going to come and have a dip, so I’ll be making sure our boys are well prepared for that.”
