Saturday Spotlight – GDFL Semi-Finals

 THE GAMES

Second Semi-Final: Thomson (1st) vs. Bannockburn (2nd) @ The Gordon TAFE Oval, St Albans Reserve –Saturday, 2:10pm

First Semi-Final: Werribee Centrals (3rd) vs. Inverleigh (4th) @ The Gordon TAFE Oval, St Albans Reserve – Sunday, 2:10pm

EIGHT YEARS BETWEEN DRINKS

Werribee Centrals and Inverleigh will meet at St Albans Reserve for the first time since the 2011 first semi-final. On that occasion, the Shayne Stone-coached Hawks knocked over the Centurions by 11 points to advance to a preliminary final in what was their first finals series since coming out of recess in 2002. Ruckman James Huybens and co-captain Ryan Garrard are the only surviving Inverleigh players from that match. Centrals, who were coached by David Leatch and had appeared in the previous year’s grand final, were knocked out in straight sets after losing the qualifying final to East Geelong. The Eagles stopped the Hawks’ audacious bid for a grand final berth with a 48-point preliminary final win.

VICARS TO MISS FOR TIGERS

Bannockburn has made one change to its team for Saturday’s second semi-final with Thomson at St Albans Reserve. Brayden Vicars (shoulder) will be missing from the team that had the better of Werribee Centrals in last week’s qualifying final. The Tigers are hopeful Vicars will be right if it was to win through to the grand final. He will be replaced by Hamish Scott.

TEAM OF THE YEAR NOT EVERYONE’S CUP OF TEA

The non-selection of East Geelong forward Jack Elliott from the GDFL Team of the Year caused some debate following Wednesday night’s Whitley Medal. A number of teammates took to social media to voice their displeasure at the decision to leave out Elliott, who finished second in the league goalkicking with 51 majors. Anakie’s Brad Gerrard also missed out on the team for the second-straight year despite posting another top-five finish in the senior vote count.
