MATCH OF THE ROUND

It will be your old-fashioned eight-point game when Werribee Centrals and Geelong West clash at Galvin Park on Saturday night. A win for the Centurions will keep them inside the top five as we approach the halfway mark of the season. It would also leave the Giants six points adrift of Centrals and potentially East Geelong and North Geelong, depending on the results of matches involving the Eagles and Giants. Nick Smith’s men have been one of the form teams of the competition since Easter with four wins and a two-point loss to Inverleigh. West was simply stunning in banging on nine goals in the final quarter arrest a 13-point deficit and beat the Magpies by 46.

TIGERS DEPTH ON SHOW

If anyone thought losing Dan Freeman to injury and Jackson Macleod to suspension was going to slow Thomson, they would have been snapped back to reality when they read this week’s inclusions. Veteran forward Luke Forbes, hard-nosed midfielder, and premiership duo Matt Baden and Ethan Solly are all in the squad to take on East Geelong. For Solly, who was one of the stars of last year’s finals series, it shapes as his first senior appearance of the year.

MORE INJURY WOES FOR PANTHERS

Bell Post Hill is set to be without Daniel Maher for at least six weeks after he suffered a lacerated kidney in last week’s loss to East Geelong. In what has been a tough season for the Panthers under new co-coaches Justin Tarr and Caleb Bacely, they have 20 injuries across their senior list. Joel Guthrie, who arrived at Bell Post Hill from Lara ahead of the 2019 season, won’t play again this year due to a dislocated hip, nor will Rhys Burke (hamstring). Travis Fursland (calf) and Jordan Flaccavento (hamstring) are due back in a fortnight.

CACHIA TO MAKE RETURN

Werribee Centrals forward Luke Cachia will play his first game since suffering a badly broken ankle in the final round of the 2018 season when he lines up in the Centrals’ reserve grade clash against Geelong West on Saturday afternoon. It was initially feared the injury suffered against Bannockburn would see him sidelined for all of the 2019 season.

LIONS AND DEVILS TO MEET IN INDIGENOUS CLASH

Belmont Lions and Corio will meet in their annual Indigenous Game at Winter Reserve. A Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony will be held prior to the senior match, while there will be a range of activities for the community on the bottom oval.
