MATCH OF THE ROUND

WONDER if needing to beat ladder leader Thomson in the final round to ensure a finals berth crossed Winchelsea coach Brendan Forssman’s mind a fortnight ago? The Blues have blown chances against Geelong West in Round 16 and Anakie last week to lock away a first finals berth since 2014. Beating the Tigers won’t be an easy proposition, especially with Reece Holwell’s men keen to take plenty of momentum into a fourth consecutive finals series. However, if Winchelsea doesn’t beat Thomson, an East Geelong loss to Bell Post Hill will keep it in fifth spot and mean an elimination final clash with Inverleigh.

EAGLES READY TO TAKE FLIGHT

East Geelong will have to overcome more than 10 years of outs at Myers Reserve if it is to snap a five-year finals drought. The Eagles are also relying on arch-rivals Thomson doing the right thing and taking care of Winchelsea at Eastern Reserve. Coach Jeremy Power is well aware there are no guarantees despite the ladder positions saying East Geelong should beat Bell Post Hill. “Bell Post Hill beat Werribee at Bell Post Hill, then we went up to Werribee and they pumped us in the second half,” he said. “It’s a roll of the dice. All we can do is back ourselves in and play the way want to play, and hopefully the opposition doesn’t do as good as you do.”

SEASON OVER FOR CENTURION

If Werribee Centrals is snap a 15-year premiership drought it will have to do it without Jackson Smith. The Centurions have confirmed the star midfielder and reigning best-and-fairest won’t play again in 2019 after scans confirmed the fractured scaphoid he suffered earlier in the season isn’t fusing as doctors had hoped. Centrals had hoped Smith would play against Corio this weekend in preparation for their first finals appearance since 2013.
