MATCH OF THE ROUND

It’s not just the chance to book a qualifying final clash with Bannockburn that is providing incentive for both Inverleigh and Werribee Centrals in a mouth-watering clash at Inverleigh Reserve. For the Hawks, they will look to make captain Ryan Garrard’s 200th senior appearance a memorable one. While the Centurions will be hoping to start their 50th anniversary celebrations (see below) in style by winning at Inverleigh for the second consecutive year. Centrals have named Jackson Smith in its squad for what would be his first game since Round 5, while defensive duo Brayden Smith and Chad Buck are also likely to return. Smith hasn’t played since Round 13 and Buck missed last week’s win over East Geelong. Hawks coach Adam Donohue returns after missing last week’s win over North Geelong. However, co-captain Jack Fiolet will be missing.

CENTRALS CELEBRATE

Werribee Centrals will mark a half-century of existence with a major event on Saturday night. Celebrating 50 Years will be held at Sanctuary Lakes Hotel and include the naming of five football and two netball teams of the decade and the introduction of the Centurions’ Hall of Fame. Media personality Mike Sheahan will be the guest speaker.

MAGPIE GREATS HONOURED

North Geelong will pay tribute to veteran duo Darren Mathisen and Derek Fitzsimmons with a testimonial at Keith Barclay Oval on Sunday. A big crowd is expected for the function to honour the pair, who both reached their 250th games in the black-and-white earlier in the year. Former coaches ‘Sid’ Jones and Darren Ryan and current and former teammates Brad Scown, Luke Parker and Justin DiBlasio will be among the speakers.

MILESTONE FOR MITCH

Anakie will have no shortage of motivation to upset Winchelsea on Saturday with Mitch White to return to the side for his 150th game for the club. White joined the Roos in 2009 and played his first senior game in Round 9 of that year. He also spent a season with North Geelong, playing 18 senior games for the Magpies in 2015, including the first semi-final win over Bannockburn. “He’s an old-fashioned backman that always takes the best forward,” co-coach Chris Moore said of White. “Because he’s quick for his size, he can play on talls and smalls. Unfortunately, this year, he’s missed half the season due to work and being overseas, which has hurt us. Structurally, he’s our of our most important players.”
