MATCH OF THE ROUND

For the most part, as the GDFL resumes, it’s the top half of the ladder playing the bottom half. The notable exception is the top-five match-up between Bannockburn and Bell Post Hill at Victoria Park. With little fanfare, the Tigers sit just a game behind ladder-leader Inverleigh, but with a far superior percentage (220.12 compared to 171.76). A win keeps them in the mix to challenge the Hawks for a minor premiership. However, a loss could see Bannockburn drop to fourth, two games adrift of Inverleigh and, potentially, a game behind East Geelong and Geelong West. Big man Kieran Fulton has kicked 20 goals in the past four rounds, including six in the win over Belmont Lions before the break. Kane Ettridge will make his debut for Bannockburn after crossing from Lara.

DOUBLE-HEADER DAY AT WEST

Geelong West’s clash with Corio will have an earlier bounce time as part of a big day of football at West Oval. The Giants and their GFL brothers are both in action. The West-Devils reserves will start at 11am ahead of a 1:10pm bounce for the seniors. That will be followed by the GFL reserves and senior clashes between Geelong West and South Barwon.

MILESTONE FOR MAGPIE

Popular North Geelong stalwart Mat Jones will make his 200th appearance in black and white against the Belmont Lions. Jones, the son of club great Daryl (Sid), has played at open age level since 2008, which includes 61 seniors and 138 reserve grade appearances. He featured in three of the Magpies’ four-straight reserves premierships between 2013-16.

‘DOC’ TO BE FAREWELLED

East Geelong reserves coach Craig ‘Doc’ Carey will be farewelled next Tuesday, June 21. His funeral will be held at St Mary’s of the Angels Basilica in Geelong from 1:30pm. Carey went into cardiac arrest near Eastern Beach ahead of an Eagles’ training session on June 7 and couldn’t be revived.
