A TARGETED recruiting program has paid off for GDFL club Anakie.

The Roos have confirmed the signings of Geelong West (GFL) big man Kadison McEwan-Walsh and Lara trio Dan Weigl, Daniel Green and Mitch Gavin for 2019.

“You do a review at the end of the season and have a wishlist of positions that you need to fill,” co-coach Chris Moore said.

“We identified we needed more on-ball depth and we thought we needed to go out and get a minimum of two.

“We got two high-quality mids, which is good, in Mitch Gavin and Greeny, and also a key forward (McEwan-Walsh) and a key back (Weigl).”

Weigl’s football talent is not the only quality Anake was keen to obtain his services for.

“Not only is he a good footballer, but he’s also a natural leader,” Moore said.

“With a relatively young list we’ve got – I don’t think we’ve got a player above the age of 30 – he can help the kids and direct and be the general from back there.”

McEwan-Walsh arrives at the Roos after 54 consecutive senior games with the Giants.

“He’s deceptively big … he’ll probably create some headaches for backmen around the league,” Moore said.

Gavin will play with the Roos for the first time since 2015, having appeared in a senior premiership with Bell Post Hill in 2017.

He also played five senior games with Lara last year.

Green played 54 games at senior level with the Cats.

Moore says list retention has been just as important as recruiting.

“It’s the only way our club could grow,” he said.

“With a junior system that’s four years away from producing a senior footballer, we have to retain players to not only be competitive but also to challenge.

“I take my hat off to the playing group. They’ve stayed loyal and, hopefully, they’ll be rewarded in the end.”

Anakie opens its 2019 season on April 6 with a trip to Richmond Crescent to play East Geelong.
