Panther greats take coaching gig

BELL Post Hill greats Caleb Bacely and Justin Tarr have been appointed co-coaches of the club for 2019.

After a lengthy external search for a replacement for Brad Martin proved fruitless, the Panthers have settled on Bacely and Tarr, who have played in six and five premierships respectively, to replace Brad Martin.

Bacely will continue his impressive career, while Tarr will coach from the sidelines after more than 200 games.

“We went through the procedure of looking someone externally and we were unable to nail anyone,” Bell Post Hill football boss Tony Dosen said.

“So we met with the leadership and decided to go internally for another year, and ‘Cubby’ and ‘Tarry’ have got plenty of experience.”

Martin stepped down in early October, which Dosen says put the Panthers slightly behind the eight-ball in their hunt for a replacement.

“We gave Brad all the time he needed, but it probably put us two or three weeks behind,” Dosen said.

“A lot of guys were taken, a lot of guys were contracted, so it was very hard.

“If we had another two or three weeks, we would have been OK.”

In more good news for the Panthers, Joel Guthrie looks set to arrive at Myers Reserve after 58 games at GFL club Lara.

However, Jayden Ettridge appears to be out the door, with Colac and District club Apollo Bay announcing it has signed the GDFL leading goal kicker.

He joins Belmont Lions-bound Nick Costello and Blake Podnar in departing Bell Post Hill.
