Holwell and McDowell to lead Raiders

REECE Holwell is keen to build on the GDFL’s recent run of success after being appointed along with the experienced Mark Mark McDowell as co-coach for this year’s AFL Victoria Community Championships campaign.

Holwell, who is entering his fourth season as coach of Thomson, and McDowell, who has been in charge at Inverleigh since the start of 2014 and was GDFL Coach of the Year last year, were confirmed in the role on Monday night.

They replace Jeremy Power following his decision to concentrate on his new role as coach of East Geelong.

The Raiders enter this year’s clash with Heathcote and District at North Geelong’s Keith Barclay Oval ranked 20th in the state following wins in the past two years against North Central and Central Highlands.

“For the league and for the playing group, three-in-a-row is going to spur us on a fair bit,” Holwell said.

“To be able to climb up the rankings and get that third win is probably going to drive us this year.”

However, Holwell admits a potential meeting with the Bellarine league in 2019 is also in the back of the mind.

A loss for the 16th ranked Sharks to Wimmera and a GDFL win over Heathcote and District could see the two local leagues meet next year for the first time since the late 1980s.

“If we were to get to play the Bellarine it would draw a hell of a lot of attention,” Holwell said.

“But, at this stage, we’ve just got to worry about the game we’ve got ahead of us this year.”

Holwell and McDowell will meet later week this to discuss their plan for the 2018 campaign and start throwing around names for the May 19 match.

One that they will be keen to have available is Inverleigh spearhead Jak Kennedy Hunt, who was unavailable last year.

Kennedy Hunt finished three votes clear of Howell in last year’s Whitley Medal and won the GDFL goal kicking, finishing with 100 majors for the season.

“We’ll definitely be looking at him,” Holwell said.

“And with Mark having a good connection with him out there at Inverleigh, that might help out getting him committed and on board.”
