GDFL ready to roll

CO-COACH Reece Holwell says aside from injury to less than a handful of players, the GDFL will field close to its best possible team in Saturday’s AFL Victoria Community Championships match-up with Heathcote and District.

The Raiders have trimmed their squad to 24 ahead of the clash at North Geelong’s Keith Barclay Oval.

“Everyone we invited in has committed to it,” Holwell said.

“Barring about three or four guys due to injury and unavailability, we’ve definitely got the ones that we wanted.

“Some guys have come back from the GFL, and we’ve got 11 guys there from last year’s side that have recommitted to this year.

“Having a tough win last year, we wanted to make sure that we got the majority of the guys from last year as well.”

Among those missing due to injury are star Inverleigh recruit Simon Seddon, Hawks teammate Blake Hutchinson and Bannockburn key position player Kieran Fulton.

“Those three guys definitely would have handy, but I think everyone’s in the same boat at this time of the year,” he said.

“It’s almost impossible to get your very best side, but if you’re only two or three guys away from your best side then that’s a really good result.”

Holwell will also be missing due to an ongoing back issue and instead will join co-coach Mark McDowell on the sidelines.

“My back is still not 100 per cent right,” he said.

“We want guys going in 100 per cent fit and I’m not at that level.

“It just makes away for someone that’s 100 per cent fit and ready to go.”

Holwell confirmed Bell Post Hill captain Cam Addie will again lead the GDFL.

“He did a fantastic job last year,” Holwell said. “His record speaks for itself.

“He’s a true leader at a really good club in Bell Post Hill.

“That was a pretty easy decision to get him to take the job again.”

Heathcote and District played the Bellarine in 2016, and Holwell says that has given them some intel on what to expect.

“They’ve got a couple of good forwards that we know about,” he said.

“Obviously Ryan Semmel from The Recruit. He’s a midfielder who seems to play Interleague every year.

“We watched the video (of Heathcote and District) against the Bellarine a couple of years ago and he looks like the one who can do a lot of damage in the midfield.

“We’ve got a little bit of a background on them, but who gets named is another thing.

“But we’ve definitely done a bit of homework on them.”
