GDFL backflips on reschedule

ONLY hours after saying it would be scheduling a round for the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, the GDFL has done an about-face.

The GDFL on Friday morning said it was moving this week’s postponed Round 8 matches to June 12 to allow for an 18-round season.

However, following mixed reaction from clubs, when the season recommences – whether that be June 5, June 19, or later – it will resume from Round 8, and rounds will be removed from the end of the season, dependent on how long the competition is paused.

“The executive have been in dialogue over last few days to come up with a fair and just format for when we are allowed to commence season,” president Neville Whitley wrote in a letter to clubs on Friday afternoon.

“The decision is that when we start again, we will commence from Round 8 and continue through to season end.

“This will allow all clubs to play each other at least once, therefore lost games and weeks will come off the end of the fixture.

“There will be no games on Queen’s Birthday weekend. We believe this to be satisfactory to all.”

Among the Round 8 matches will be the highly-anticipated Bannockburn-Inverleigh clash at Victoria Park, which the Tigers are keen to retain as a night match.
