EAST Geelong coach Jeremy Power is embracing the excitement that comes with his team’s season being alive coming into the final round of the season.

The Eagles, who saw off Belmont Lions by 66 points at Richmond Crescent on Saturday, now sit just two points behind fifth-placed Winchelsea following the Blues’ shock loss to Anakie.

If East can overcome Bell Post Hill at Myers Reserve, and minor premier Thomson beats Winchelsea, the Eagles will find themselves in an elimination final against Inverleigh.

“We joked last week when we found out West got up (over Winchelsea) that we’re still a chance,” Power said.

“We’ll just roll with that this week and see what happens this weekend.

“But it’s exciting to head to the end of the season with it all being still alive.”

Power admits improvement on last year’s 4-14 was more of a focus than playing finals for the first time since 2014.

“To know where the competition was last year and how far away we were, I think it would have been foolish to think we could just jump up into the finals,” he said.

“It sounds cliched, but we just wanted to stick to the process and improve each week.

“Over the course of the pre-season, we started to think, ‘maybe we’re onto something here with the way the guys are starting to buy-in’.

“That started to roll through the season, and the guys, to their credit, kept turning up and wanting to get better.

“And this is the outcome so far”.

Power was impressed with the way the Eagles were able to see off the Lions, who have been much-improved under caretaker coach Lachie Edwards in the second half of the season.

“I was pretty nervous before the game because I wasn’t sure how we were going to respond, and knowing that Belmont had played pretty well against Bell Post Hill the week before,” he said.

“We played one of our better games for the year, particularly in the wet, which has been a bit of a theme for us.”
