LOCAL football cult figure Joe Fama has departed Winchelsea for GDFL rivals Bannockburn.

A member of the GDFL interleague squad in 2019, Fama spent two seasons at the Blues, playing 34 games and kicking 37 goals as a half-forward/midfielder.

Fama, who has also played at GFL clubs St Mary’s and Grovedale, is the second player from a rival club to join the reigning premier, following the Tigers’ addition of 2018 Whitley medallist Matt James from Bell Posy Hill.

“His ability to win the ball and use it effectively will help us in our forward line and adds another weapon to the arsenal,” a statement on Bannockburn’s Facebook page said.

“In 2019 Joey was announced in the GDFL Interleague squad, forging a good relationship with Matt James and some of our selected players.”

MEANWHILE, experienced mentor Brendan Smith has been named coach of the Tigers’ inaugural senior women’s team.

As well as coaching the VAFA and WRFL, Smith was coach of Lara’s women’s team in 2019.
