CARETAKER Belmont Lions coach Lachie Edwards will wait until the end of the season before deciding whether to put his hand up to take on the role full-time.

The Lions have officially started the search for a replacement for Ash Witney, who parted company with the club in mid-June.

“I’m keen to finish off the next two weeks and have that conversation after the season, and see where the committee’s at and what they’re looking for,” Edwards said.

“The signs of improvement are there. We’ve just played our third junior (Josh Allen), and it gives you a bit of belief to maybe have a go at it.

“When you see a 16-year-old kick a goal, and the whole team get around him, it was a pretty special moment.

“We’ve got to get through East Geelong and Inverleigh and then we’ll have chats after that.”

BFL: NICOL WEIGHING UP FUTURE

Since Edwards, 26, took over, he has guided the Lions to wins over Bell Post Hill and Winchelsea, while also being in competitive in losses to North Geelong (12 points) and Anakie (nine points).

They also weren’t disgraced in losses to finals-bound Thomson, Bannockburn and Werribee Centrals during the seven matches Edwards has been in charge.

“It was about us coming together as a group a bit more,” he said.

“We didn’t want to finish off games the way we were in the past and letting teams roll over us.

“We wanted to change the way we played a little bit, and that’s what we’ve done.

“Now we’re starting to run out games and teams are scared of what we can produce because we’re a little bit unpredictable at times.”

The Lions round out their season against East Geelong and premiership contender Inverleigh.

“East Geelong are in the hunt (for finals) still, and it would be good to knock them off,” Edwards said.

“Inverleigh might be nervous about what we can do, and if it (a loss) changes their position on the ladder from double-chance to elimination final, then that’s what we’ll try to do.”
