GEELONG West has reappointed co-coaches Andrew Clark and Mitch Wight for the 2020 season.

The Giants players were told at training on Thursday night that Clark would continue for a fifth season in charge, with Wight entering his second season sharing the role after previously spending time as an assistant coach.

President Chris Wilkie said the club is happy to see the duo continue.

“We sit down after Round 12 after we’ve played ever one (once) and look at where we’re going,” he said.

“We always start with the coaches and then move down to the players.

“We had a chat to them (Clark and Wight) separately, and then to the team manager, who is always on the bench with them.

“Then we had a really good chat with the leadership group and asked their opinion.

“We all came to the conclusion it’s best for us if we want to improve to have them as co-coaches again for next year.”

After nearly two decades in the wilderness, Clark and Wight have helped turn around the fortunes of the Giants.

Following a winless first season in charge in 2016 in West’s last season as the Cheetahs, they improved to eight wins and a draw in 2017 and finished sixth.

2018 brought about a return to finals for the first time in 20 years, where they beat Bannockburn in the elimination final before being knocked out by eventual premier Thomson in the first semi-final.

Wilkie said stability had been a key to the Giants’ revival.

“I’ll be going into my fifth year as well, so to have all three of us around that long from where we started from to where we are now has been a bit of a journey,” Wilkie said.

“But we can see the light at the end of the tunnel, definitely.”

With five rounds remaining in the home-and-away season, West sits seventh with six wins and a draw ahead of what looms as a crucial clash with Thomson on Saturday.
