Breaking down the draw – GDFL

WITH a restructure of local football set to take place at the end of 2018, next year’s GDFL fixture is likely to be the last time we see the “rolling draw”.

Here krockfootball.com.au looks at who each team plays once and how many finalists they will face twice.

ANAKIE (2017 – 7th)

Play once (2017 finishing position): East Geelong (h – 9th), Inverleigh (a – 2nd), Corio (h – 12th), Geelong West (a – 6th)

Verdict: 2018 marks 20 years since the Roos last played finals.  Will do well to end that drought after copping a draw that features four of this year’s finalists.

BANNOCKBURN (2017 -3rd)

Play once (2017 finishing position): Belmont Lions (h – 11th), Bell Post Hill (a – 1st) , East Geelong (h – 9th), Inverleigh (a – 2nd)

Verdict: You can just about lock in another top-three finish for the Country Tigers. Avoid return meetings with grand finalists Bell Post Hill and Inverleigh.

BELL POST HILL (2017 – 1st)

Play once (2017 finishing position): Winchelsea (a – 8th), Bannockburn (h – 3rd), North Geelong (a – 5th), Werribee Centrals (h – 10th)

Verdict: On the chase for five straight flags, the rolling draw sees the Panthers play just two of this year’s finalists (Inverleigh and Thomson) twice.

BELMONT LIONS (2017 – 11th)

Play once (2017 finishing position): Bannockburn (a – 3rd), North Geelong (h – 5th), Werribee Centrals (a -10th), Thomson (h – 4th)

Verdict: Play just two of this year’s finalists twice – but they are grand final pair Bell Post Hill and Inverleigh. Should rise up the ladder with this draw.

CORIO (2017 – 12th)

Play once (2017 finishing position): Thomson (a – 4th), Geelong West (h – 6th), Anakie (a – 7th), Winchelsea (h – 8th)

Verdict: Ouch. Return meetings with four finalists, including grand final combatants Bell Post Hill and Inverleigh.

EAST GEELONG (2017 – 9th)

Play once (2017 finishing position): Anakie (a – 7th), Winchelsea (h – 8th), Bannockburn (a – 3rd), North Geelong (h – 5th)

Verdict: Return meetings with Bell Post Hill and Inverleigh, but also play Corio, Belmont Lions and Werribee Centrals twice.

GEELONG WEST (2017 – 6th)

Play once (2017 finishing position): Inverleigh (h – 2nd), Corio (a – 12th), Thomson (a – 4th), Anakie (h – 7th)

Verdict: The owner of the GDFL’s longest finals drought, can the Giants jump one position and play finals for the first time since 1997? Have three of the finalists from 2017 in return meetings.

INVERLEIGH (2017 – 2nd)

Play once (2017 finishing position): Geelong West (a – 6th), Anakie (h – 7th), Winchelsea (a -8th), Bannockburn (h – 3rd)

Verdict: Return meetings with grand final conqueror Bell Post Hill, Thomson and North Geelong. However, they get the bottom four twice.

NORTH GEELONG (2017 – 5th)

Play once (2017 finishing position): Werribee Centrals (h – 10th), Belmont Lions (a -11th), Bell Post Hill (h – 1st), East Geelong (a – 9th)

Verdict: Like Inverleigh, the Magpies play three finalists twice, but avoid a return meeting with recent nemesis Bell Post Hill .

THOMSON (2017 – 4th)

Play once (2017 finishing position): Corio (h -12th), Werribee Centrals (a – 10th), Geelong West Giants (h – 6th), Belmont Lions (a – 11th)

Verdict: The toughest draw of any of the finalists of 2017. Return meetings with Bell Post Hill, Inverleigh, Bannockburn and North Geelong. Only play the bottom three once.

WERRIBEE CENTRALS (2017 – 10th)

Play once (2017 finishing position): North Geelong (a – 5th), Thomson (h – 4th), Belmont Lions (h – 11th), Bell Post Hill (a – 1st)

Verdict: Not a bad result for first-year coach Nick Smith. Avoided a return meeting with three finalists from 2017, while playing the likes of Corio, East Geelong, Anakie and Winchelsea twice.

WINCHELSEA (2017 – 8th)

Play once (2017 finishing position): Bell Post Hill (h – 1st), East Geelong (a – 9th), Inverleigh (h – 2nd), Corio (a – 12th)

Verdict: Avoid return meetings with grand finalists Bell Post Hill and Inverleigh, while getting the likes of Belmont Lions, Werribee Centrals and Anakie twice.
