BFL result a timely reminder

BARWON Heads’ shock loss to Modewarre in the BFL Grand Final hasn’t gone unnoticed by either Inverleigh or Thomson going into Saturday’s GDFL decider.

The Seagulls went into last week’s match as red-hot favourites after posting a 16-2 win-loss record during the home-and-away season before demolishing the Warriors in the second semi-final to the tune of 63 points.

The Hawks also finished 16-2 and then saw of Bell Post Hill in the second semi-final to take the direct route to the big dance.

While Inverleigh’s opponent will be different to a fortnight ago, co-captain Justin DiBlasio says Barwon Heads’ defeat is a timely reminder.

“I’m sure we will go in favourites, but that doesn’t mean we have the cup in our back pocket or anything like that,” he said.

“We’ve still got to work hard; we are still a team that has things to work on as well.

“There are many areas we need to improve on and hopefully four quarters of footy will win it for us on Saturday.”

Tigers’ co-coach Reece Holwell has conceded his team will go in as underdogs having lost to Inverleigh twice during the home-and-away season.

“We knew as soon as we won on Saturday we’d go in as underdogs this week,” he said. That’s fine, they’ve been the best side all year.

“That shows in where they finished on the ladder and going straight through from the first final.

“We understand we’re going to be underdogs, but with what we saw last week, anything is possible.”

DiBlasio says the Hawks have “no excuses” for not landing the club’s first silverware at senior level since coming out of a seven-year recess in 2002.

Injuries and suspension conspired against them in last year’s decider, but he says that loss to Bell Post Hill isn’t acting as motivation for Inverleigh.

“It’s in the past now, and there’s a totally different 22 coming out on Saturday,” DiBlasio said. “We have to focus on this year only, so that’s what we are going to do.”

“It’s very different to last year. Last year we played, and we were a couple of players down and a few blokes injured.

“This year we are fresh and ready to go. It’s totally different.”
