Belief building at Banno

BANNOCKBURN co-captain Josh Cole has declared Thomson beatable heading into Sunday’s GDFL Grand Final at St Albans Reserve.

The reigning premier has lost just one game in 2019, beating Bannockburn by 44 points in their second semi-final meeting, and by 16 points in Round 9.

However, Cole says Thomson’s upset win over red-hot favourite Inverleigh in last year’s decider give Bannockburn hope it can topple the City Tigers.

“It’s just another game of footy, and on any given day, anyone can beat anyone, and that’s been shown in the GDFL this year,” he said.

“You can push anyone, so 100 per cent (it gives us confidence). But the finals series they had last year, it’s definitely something we can build confidence off.

“We know it can be done. They’re definitely not unbeatable. Teams like Bell Post Hill have shown they were unbeatable, but we definitely don’t think Thomson are unbeatable.

“We’ll give it a crack.”

Cole says there is a strong belief among the group, of which up to 16 featured in the 2016 grand final loss to Bell Post Hill in 2016, can snap a 16-year premiership drought.

“Internally, we’ve always had a belief that we just have to play the right footy,” he said.

“At times it’s been nowhere near good enough, at times we’ve had good days and good quarters, but until we can put a full, four-quarter performance together against Thomson — and we’re going to have to — then we’ll never know.”

Bannockburn was held to its lowest score of the season in the second semi-final, and Cole says they reviewed that lost thoroughly.

“We had a good look at it, a good look at their game plan and how they’re going to play,” he said.

“Hopefully they showed us all the cards they’ve got. We’ll see if they’ve got more tricks in their bag and likewise with us.

“We weren’t at our best that day. Hopefully, we can bring improvement and make it a more even contest.”
