Extended seasons on the table

AFL Barwon has left the door open to extending the GFL and BFL seasons if restrictions on community sport remain in place until mid-August.

The local governing body has released a six-page “roadmap” to clubs covering scenarios for a return to play on July 31, August 7 and August 14, including women’s and underage football and junior netball.

If play wasn’t to resume until August 14, the GFL grand final would be played on either the AFL Grand Final public holiday on Friday, September 24 or Sunday, September 26.

The BFL grand final would be pushed back to the weekend of September 11-12, with Sunday looming as the likely option so as not to clash with the GDFL decider.

“In endeavouring to provide an equitable fixture, the following adjustments will be made, so each club has the
ability to play against each other at least once,” the document said.

“Whilst it is our ambition for this to happen, we must be prepared that this may not be able to occur with the uncertainty and instability of the current COVID-19 environment.

“It is our preference not to make any adjustments to the current finals structures.”

If the GFL were to resume on July 31, the currently scheduled Round 18 would be brought forward and replace Round 15, with rounds 16 and 17 to follow.

A new set of match-ups would be drawn up for Round 18 on August 21, dependent on ground availability.

A return to play on August 7 would see rounds 16, 17 and 18 played in order, with Colac to host St Mary’s in Round 16 and South Barwon to host Geelong West in Round 17 to even up home-and-away matches.

If play doesn’t resume until August 14, action will recommence at Round 16, following by Round 17 and 18, with finals to start on September 4 and the grand final to be played on September 24 or 26.

A July 31 return for the BFL would see the now “floating” Round 15 played to ensure every club has played the nine others at least once.

That would be followed on August 7 by the already fixtured Round 18, with finals to start on August 14 and the grand final to be played on September 4.

If play doesn’t resume until August 7, Round 15 will become the last home-and-away round before finals commence the following weekend.

An August 14 return would also see Round 15 played and finals commence the next weekend, with the grand final scheduled for the weekend of September 11-12.

AFL Barwon says if the shutdown of adult community sport continues beyond August 14 it will develop a further strategy to complete the season.
