Tiger’s worst fears confirmed

TORQUAY coach Dom Gleeson expects the news that popular veteran Tim Carty has suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament will hit hard at McCartney Oval.

Scans on Wednesday confirmed the club’s worst fears, with the 33-year-old veteran of more than 200 games becoming the second Tiger in as many weeks to suffer the injury following ruck Tom Yensch against Drysdale.

Gleeson was in the vicinity when his 2017 premiership teammate hurt his knee in last week’s win over Modewarre at McCartney Oval.

“He just got it stuck underneath him … it was just really innocuous how he did it,” Gleeson said.

“It looks like his studs got stuck in the ground, and it just gave away.

“I wasn’t far away from him, and I just went to him because I could tell he was in a fair bit of pain, and his body went into a bit of involuntary shaking because of that pain.

“He got the scan yesterday (Wednesday), got the feedback, and he’s already on the road to recovery.”

Gleeson said Carty’s absence from the Tiger defence would be felt as it searches for a second flag in five seasons.

“He missed the week before (injuring his knee) to attend a wedding, and I really felt we missed his leadership down back and the control he’s got,” Gleeson said.

“He’s been a stalwart of our team, and it’s going to hit us pretty hard.

“It’s really disappointing for him at the age he is now. But, no doubt he’ll come back and bounce back for us.

“He’s the ultimate professional.”

The news was slightly better for star forward Lucas Anderson, with scans ruling out a torn ACL.

However, he may need to go under the knife and is facing at least six weeks on the sidelines, likely ruling him out until after the bye in early July.

“He will want an answer (on surgery) pretty quickly because his wife’s due (to give birth) fairly soon,” Gleeson said.

“He’ll want to have it done so he can walk around.

“We’ll see him back six-plus weeks.”
