PORTARLINGTON will have to make do without Luke Williams for the entire 2019 season after the star defender suffered a severe hand injury in a workplace incident.

It’s a further blow for the winless Demons, who has already farewelled the likes of Nick O’Neill and the Daniele brothers, Nick and Chris, during the pre-season.

Coach Jesse Smith had hoped Williams would be right for the backend of the season.

However, it was confirmed earlier this week the former GFL representative, who works as a carpenter, won’t play again until 2020.

“His injury is quite significant, as you could imagine putting someone out for the full year,” Smith said. “He’s lucky to still have three of his fingers.

“It was just an unlucky work incident with a power saw.

“His middle finer’s still in a bit of trouble, so that’s in a cast for the next six weeks, then he’s going to be doing hand therapy for the next 4-6 months to, hopefully, get full feeling back in all three fingers.

“It was going to be a 12-week injury, but he had a meeting with the specialist, and the specialist advised him to have the full year off.”
