The Wash-Up – BFL Round 3

WINNERS

BFL SCOREBOARD – ROUND 3

“THE” RESULT

NEWCOMB doing the job against Drysdale. It is hard to believe the Power were on the end of hidings by a combined 276 points in the opening two rounds. With the new era of promotion-relegation on the horizon, this is the win Rory Nicol’s men needed to give themselves the belief they can stay in the BFL is the proposed restructure goes ahead.

THE TALKING POINT

After grinding out a Good Friday win over Modewarre, Torquay have suffered consecutive losses to Queenscliff and Geelong Amateur. The Tigers face a challenging three weeks, hosting the much-improved Anglesea, before consecutive away games against fellow finals contenders Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads. Surely the reigning premier won’t be 1-5 after a third of the season.

BIG WINNER

The importance of Anglesea’s win over Modewarre may not be known until later in the season, but with seven teams holding legitimate finals hopes, the four points claimed by the Roos may be worth their weight in gold.

BIG LOSER

Drysdale’s Round 1 win over Queenscliff seems a lifetime ago. That victory had the BFL fraternity wondering if the Hawks were a chance to move up the ladder and challenge for finals. Now the more pressing concern for those at Mortimer Oval is avoiding relegation. Beating Portarlington on Anzac Day is a non-negotiable.

INJURY ISSUES

Barwon Heads win over Ocean Grove has come at a cost, with both Dylan Holland (broken jaw) and Tim Wight (ankle) failing to see out the game. Holland is looking at eight weeks on the sidelines, while the extent of the damage suffered by Wight is still be confirmed. Drysdale, which went into the defeat by Newcomb without Matt Hebbard and Damien Hoare, then lost captain Daniel Jull (concussion) and Joe Vallelonga (broken collarbone).

THE KEY NUMBER

20. The number of consecutive losses Newcomb had suffered against Drysdale since beating the Hawks in the 2007 second semi-final.
