The Wash-Up – BFL Round 18
- Updated: August 18, 2019

WINNERS
“THE” RESULT
Drysdale has honoured the memory of late premiership defender Ryan Gatgens in fine style with a seven-point win over Anglesea at Mortimer Oval. However, it wasn’t the game of football that will be etched in the memories of those at the ground, instead, it will be what took place on the field following the final siren. Players were joined by staff and supporters in a giant huddle on the wing around Gatgen’s jumper and a giant No.30 that had been sign-written on the ground to sing the Hawk’s theme song. “It was a really touching thing,” co-coach Luke Matthews told K rock’s The Wash-Up. “We just wanted to make the week as perfect as possible. How? We weren’t sure what we could do. We just threw (around) some ideas. In the last five or so minutes, I thought the game was done … I was pretty confident, (and) I just remember looking around trying to find David Walder, the president, and I just wanted him to round up as many of the club people (as possible) and come together as one like we have all week. To sing the theme song around the No.30 on the ground was really a truly special thing and something I’ll never forget, and I suppose a lot of other people won’t forget.”

SEVEN POINTS A BIG DIFFERENCE FOR ANGLESEA
Anglesea has been left to rue what might have been following the seven-point loss to Drysdale at Mortimer Oval. If the Roos had of overcome the Hawks, they would have claimed their first minor premiership since 1999. Instead, they need to find four consecutive wins to snap a 20-year premiership drought, starting with an elimination final against Modewarre at Portarlington Recreation Reserve next Sunday.
DAY OUT FOR WORPEL
Just three rounds after spending a week in the reserves, Tom Worpel has slammed home 10 goals in Modewarre’s 140-point hiding of Portarlington. Worpel had played 96 consecutive games for the Warriors at senior level before being dropped. “We spoke about some things we’d like to see Tom do out on the ground, and we probably didn’t see that for a 4-6 week period,” co-coach Seamus Orr. “So, he went back and worked on that area of his game.” The clash with the Demons was his 100th for Modda (99 senior). It took Worpel’s tally for the season to 44 majors, placing him fifth overall on the BFL goalkicking table.
CLARK’S WINNING START
Talented Queenscliff teenager Jhye Clark has made a debut to remember, kicking a goal in the Coutas’ 73-point hiding of Ocean Grove. Clark, the son of coach Steve, only turned 15 last month, making him the youngest debutant at BFL senior level in close to a quarter-of-a-century. Clark’s brother Billy also lined-up in just his second game and found himself on the scoresheet.
