The Wash-Up – BFL Round 17

WINNERS

BFL SCOREBOARD – ROUND 17

“THE” RESULT

Geelong Amateur has put one foot in the second semi-final, and at the same ended Drysdale’s finals hopes, following a 31-point win over the Hawks at KFC Oval. However, to earn the week off, Ammos will need to beat Barwon Heads on Saturday or face the prospect of playing the Seagulls again in the second semi-final. Mitch Day starred with seven goals to take his tally to 56 for the season. “He was back this best, Daisy,” coach Kane Tenace said. “He took some good marks, he laid some tackles and all sorts of things. He fired up. Not that he had been playing poorly, but he hadn’t been kicking bags of goals for the last month or so since his suspension. It was nice for him to get a few early and end up with a good bag for us.”

TIGERS MADE TO WORK BY PORT

Torquay took more than three quarters to shake off a gallant Portarlington at Ron Evans Oval. The Tigers led by just three points before banging on 9.7 to 0.2 in the final term. They now need to beat Newcomb and have Geelong Amateur roll Barwon Heads to claim the double-chance and a likely qualifying final meeting with Anglesea. Youngster Clay Mulgrew was key to the Demons’ competitive effort, continuing an impressive run of form for the ex-Colac junior.

FINALS TON LIKELY FOR ERSKINE

Jordan Erskine may have to wait until the finals to become the first Anglesea player since Jim Kelly in 1987 to reach 100 goals. After six goals in the win over Newcomb, Erskine sits on 90 majors with one round to play, needing 10 against Drysdale to top the ton. Either way, he is the first Roo to take out the BFL goalkicking award since Luke Winter in 2000.
