The Wash-Up – BFL Round 16

WINNERS
“THE” RESULT
Anybody who has been following the BFL closely in 2019 knew that Newcomb was eventually going to claim a scalp. And the six teams above them on the ladder were praying it wasn’t going to be them. However, in the end, it was Drysdale that dropped four points that might see it be on the outside looking in come finals time. For Power coach Rory Nicol, the eight-point victory was further validation of the journey he’s been on since taking charge ahead of the 2016 season. “It was validation to the players that they are good enough, and validation to the club that we are on the right path,” Nicol said. “The first win to break the drought was a good one. But, as far as beating someone higher than us on the ladder, so it’s very pleasing for the 22 players and the coaches that have put a lot of hard work in.” The victory was the Power’s first at Mortimer Oval since Round 6, 2007.
TWO OUT OF THREE AIN’T BAD
Anglesea coach Paul Nigro has admitted if he’d been offered two wins from the last three games he would have taken it. The Roos faced Torquay, Geelong Amateur and Barwon Heads in tough stretch at Alcoa Oval, with a 47-point loss to the Tigers in Round 14 the only blemish. “Torquay, whilst we were within a kick early in the last quarter, they got a hold of us late,” Nigro said. “As has been reported, we were disappointed, collectively, with our last quarter. That’s not us and we haven’t done that all year. The ability to rebound against the top two sides the next two weeks has been terrific and given us confidence moving forward.” If the Roos can beat Newcomb next week and Geelong Amateur falls to a desperate Drysdale, Anglesea will be in the box seat to claims its first minor premiership since winning its last flag in 1999.
LOCK IN LOCKWOOD
Torquay welcomed back former Williamstown star Cam Lockwood from a lengthy injury layoff in the 82-point win over Queenscliff. Lockwood, who hadn’t played since the Round 4 clash with Anglesea, finished with two goals and looms as a match-winner comes finals time.
AMMOS CONTINUE DOMINANCE OF WARRIORS
One only had to look at the head-to-head history in the BFL between Geelong Amateur and Modewarre to not be surprised that Ammos came away from Community Bank Oval with a 22-point win. Of the 14 meetings prior to Saturday’s clash, Amateur had won 13. The overall record from 48 meetings sees Ammos with 42 wins and the Warriors with just six since they joined the competition in 1996.
