The Wash-Up – BFL Round 14

WINNERS

SCOREBOARD – ROUND 14

“THE” RESULT

Torquay ensured the gap between itself in sixth place and the fifth-placed team remained at just half-a-game after outlasting Anglesea for a 47-point win at Alcoa Oval. With the margin only 10 points at three-quarter time, the Tigers slammed on 8.7 to 3.0 in the final term to claim their ninth win of the season. Not only did the 2017 premier stay in touch with the top five, but they’re also just four points adrift of the double-chance. “It was a very important win,” assistant coach and captain Ben Raidme told K rock’s The Wash-Up. “To be honest, Dom (Gleeson – coach) emphasised it, but it wasn’t the be-all and end-all looking at the end of the season. As cliched as it sounds, it was that “one week at a time” sort of spiel, which he put his own spin on, and it sounded really positive.” Raidme says Gleeson urged his players to take the game on in the final quarter. “It was a really tough game, and the game didn’t really open up until the last quarter,” Raidme said. “He just urged us to play that fast, first-option footy, and look to get it into our forwards really quickly.

HEADS WIN PHYSICAL CLASH WITH HAWKS

Barwon Heads has overcome Drysdale in an emotion-charged match-up at Howard Harmer Oval. The Seagulls replaced the Hawks in second spot on the ladder as a result of the 51-point win. “It was a probably a big game we were crying out to have coming off the bye,” co-coach Mitch Herbison said. “We played quite well last week against Portarlington, but we really wanted to test ourselves against a quality team in Drysdale.” The margin could have been greater if not for the Seagulls’ inaccuracy, finishing with 37 scoring shots to 14. “Especially that first quarter,” Herbison said. “We had a fair bit of the play; we had 17 shots on goal for the quarter. We didn’t quite capitalise. It was a bit blowy down here at Barwon Heads. Conditions were a little bit tricky, but we certainly missed some chances that we would like to take.”

AMMOS GIVE VALUE FOR MONEY

Would hate to be a Geelong Amateur supporter with a heart problem. Kane Tenace’s men have now featured in three consecutive games decided by six points or less following Saturday’s thrilling victory over Queenscliff. In all, Ammos have played five matches where there’s been a kick in it for four wins and a loss. As a result, they sit six points clear on top of the ladder with four rounds to play.

DEBUTANT ON REPORT

Barwon Heads first-gamer Nick Avery may have to wait a couple of weeks to play his second match for the Seagulls after being offered a two-week suspension for an alleged incident with Drysdale young gun Tev Nofi. Avery, who arrived at Howard Harmer Oval from Essendon and District league club Westmeadows, can either accept the suspension offer or challenge it at the AFL Barwon Tribunal.
