WINNERS
“THE” RESULT
Drysdale defeated Torquay at McCartney Oval for the first time since its last premiership-winning year in 2010. The Hawks pulled away from a Tiger line-up missing the likes of Paul McMahon, James Saker and Billy Henderson to record a 34-point victory. “It was a fantastic win in a few senses,” co-coach Luke Matthews said. “With how tight the competition is, it was an eight-point game; we knew they would be desperate just like us; the conditions were always going to be tough, plus we haven’t won down at Torquay for nine years, which was always going to be a big challenge.” Matthews was part of the team that defeated the Tigers in Round 8, 2010 by 27 points, as were current players Mitch Scott and Ben Carmichael, with Carmichael playing arguably his best game of the season on Saturday. “Ben was brilliant in the middle; those conditions definitely suited him … he was fantastic, he tried his heart out all day,” Matthews said
ROOS READY FOR BIG THREE WEEKS AT HOME
Anglesea quickly turned its attention to the first of three straight games at home, starting with Great Ocean Road rivals Torquay, after holding off a late charge from Queenscliff to win by four points in, at times, torrid conditions at the Couta Bowl. The Roos, who are unbeaten since Round 5, face the Tigers, Geelong Amateur and Barwon Heads before rounding out the season with trips to Newcomb and Drysdale. “It’ll certainly give us a good indication where we can finish in that mix, and how we’re going to match-up, and what we need to get right,” coach Paul Nigro said.
SEASON FOR STAR COUTA
Queenscliff forward Daniel DeGois’ return from a seven-week injury lay-off came to a halt early in the last quarter of the loss to Anglesea. DeGois was forced from the field in the first quarter of with a recurrence of a hamstring injury suffered against Torquay in Round 7. DeGois, who kicked a century of goals in 2014 before heading to Canberra to play, has managed 23 of a possible 49 games since the start of 2017, with a knee injury wiping out most of that year. With only five matches remaining, it might be season over for ‘Frenchy’.
TENACE TAKES THE FIELD
Geelong Amateur coach Kane Tenace has taken to the field for the first time since arriving at KFC Oval. The former Geelong speedster, who joined Ammos as a non-playing coach, kicked a goal in the 28-point reserve grade win over Ocean Grove before taking his seat in the coaches box. Tenace’s last game was St Mary’s reserves grand final win last year.
