MATCH OF THE ROUND

Will the real Geelong Amateur please stand up? Sitting inside the top five with a 3-3 record, it’s still hard to get a gauge on whether Ammos will make a quick return to finals or will be watching on come mid-August. Injury, COVID-19 and suspension haven’t helped new co-coaches Sam Darley and Dan Holroyd, and Darley will be missing again as he serves the second week of a suspension for an incident in the win over Anglesea a fortnight ago. Captain Harry Kershaw is also sidelined after undergoing knee surgery. Today’s opponent Barwon Heads has quietly kicked into gear after consecutive losses to start the season. With the club’s centenary celebrations tonight, the Seagulls won’t want to leave KFC Oval without the four points.

QUESTION MARKS OVER ROO’S FUTURE

Anglesea isn’t counting on seeing veteran defender Dale Carson anytime soon. Carson, who turned 38 on Thursday, hasn’t played since the Round 4 loss to Torquay. “Dale’s (fianceé) just had a baby … and he’s been struggling with a knee injury, which has held him back a bit this year,” Roos co-coach Jordan Keras said. “He’s weighing up his options. At this stage, his commitment is to his family. I’m not sure whether he’ll play again this year.”

AMMOS MARK FLAG MILESTONE

Geelong Amateur will mark 50 years since winning the VAFA B Section premiership in 1972 at today’s clash with Ocean Grove KFC Oval. Coached by John Vautier, Ammos were too strong in the grand final for Old Ivanhoe, 16.13 (109) to 8.15 (63). In what was a big year for the club, Amateur’s reserves finished runner-up to Uni Blacks, losing their grand final by just three points.

LADIES’ DAYS MAKE IMPORTANT MONEY

Congratulations to Geelong Amateur and Queenscliff, who raised money for important causes as part of Ladies’ Day gatherings last Saturday. Ammos will make a $10,000 contribution to Hope Bereavement Care, while part of the proceeds from the Coutas’ function will be donated to Geelong Mums.
