Nicol weighing up future

NEWCOMB coach Rory Nicol is unsure whether he will continue into what would be club-record fifth season in charge.

If Nicol, who has overseen a total rebuild of the club since taking the job at the end of 2015, does remain at the Power in 2020 it may be in a shared role.

“I think a playing coach would be a step in the right direction for the young group we’ve got,” Nicol said.

“Whether I stay in some capacity to help that playing coach is undecided at this stage.

“We’re having a look at it and taking our time.”

Newcomb has posted six wins in 2019, including beating Drysdale by eight points on Saturday, and should finish in 7th spot, having occupied 9th or 10th since winning its last premiership in 2007.

Nicol says he would be comfortable stepping down knowing that the majority of the playing group will remain at Newcomb Sand & Soil Oval.

“Normally they won’t recommit until they know who the coach is,” Nicol said.

“But they’ve been really good; they’ve actually started to own their footy club and recommitted without knowing who the coach is.

“It’s probably the most pleasing thing since I walked in the door four years ago to see guys actually own the Newcomb Football Club.

“It’s their club now, and it feels that way; they’re playing for each other, they’re playing for the jumper, and they’re playing for the club, which is great.

“It used to feel like everyone was going to walk out the door if I left. But, I guess the culture has kicked, and the guys are there for the journey, and they want to be successful.”
