GEELONG Amateur is facing the prospect of being without captain Daniel Lovick for the remainder of 2018 after scans confirmed the star defender has broken his foot.

Co-coach Rowan McSparron is resigned to being without the St Joseph’s great for an extended period after he suffered the injury in the weekend’s shock loss to Portarlington at Ron Evans Oval, with surgery an option.

“It’s basically an identical injury to (Ammos spearhead) Mitch Day by the look of it,” McSparron said.

“If he gets a pin in it, it should be around the seven-week mark, roughly.

“If he doesn’t, he just waits for four weeks to see if it heals and then it goes from there.”

What road Lovick takes with his recovery will be left in the veteran’s hands.

“At the end of the day, he’s got to do best for his work and his family,” McSparron said.

“He’s got two young kids at home and he’s got to make sure that’s alright there, and being a ‘sparky’ (electrician) he needs to walk around a fair bit as well.

“There are plenty more important things than football for Daniel at the minute.”

McSparron has “fingers crossed” Lovick and Day will be seen again in 2018.

“It’s not a season-ending injury, but you know what it’s like with breaks and things like that,” he said.

“It can take longer to heal or you can have complications and lots of things can go wrong.

“So, we’re hopeful, but we’ll just have to wait and see with time how it all heals.

Day hasn’t played since Round 3 but McSparron said he is now out of the moon boot.

“He’ll slowly start getting back into walking some laps and jogging some laps, then from there he should be able to jump back into training,” McSparron said.

“I’m of the understanding, once you are able to run and fully weight-bear through it, it’s pretty much right to go.

“We’ll just monitor him over the next couple of weeks.”
