Heads re-sign premiership coaches

MITCH Herbison and Troy Mitchell will get the chance to lead Barwon Heads’ delayed premiership defence in 2021 after re-signing with the club.

The Seagulls revealed on Friday morning the pair would retake the reins, with Herbison’s fourth season in charge to make him the longest-serving senior coach at Howard Harmer Oval.

Mitchell, who joined Barwon Heads having previously guided GFL clubs St Mary’s and Lara to grand final appearances, said the decision to re-sign was a “no-brainer”.

“We are both excited to continue as co-coaches because we have tremendous support from our football department, including our assistant coaches,” he said.

“Our playing group are motivated and have an appetite to work hard and improve, and our club is also undertaking significant facility improvements which is great for everyone involved at our club.

“Whilst very disappointing that we haven’t had a season in 2020, we can’t wait to launch into the 2021 season as our group has a fierce hunger to have more team success.”

Herbison told krockfootball.com.au last month he was keen to go on with Mitchell.

“Once the season was cancelled, Troy and (football director) Brendan Curry and myself sat down and mapped out a little bit of a plan for this year and moving into pre-season (and) how it could all look,” he said.

“Troy and I are both keen to continue, so we’ll continue to put the work in for the rest of this year and pre-season next year, and the club can make it a call on that when they’re ready.”
