Gleeson and Meesen share Ash

THE Les Ash Medal has finished in a tie for the second consecutive year with Modewarre co-coach John Meesen and Torquay counterpart Dom Gleeson sharing the Bellarine Football League’s senior best-and-fairest.

Both finished on 22 votes, to finish two clear of Anglesea duo Jordan Erskine and Ryan Williams, despite their home-and-away seasons coming to a premature end.

Meesen missed the final four rounds following finger surgery, while a foot issue sidelined Gleeson for the last two matches.

However, pre-count favourite, league-leading goal kicker, Erskine, who had sat on 20 votes since Round 12, was unable to poll again. While Williams didn’t attract a vote in the final loss to Drysdale after joining Erskine on 20.

After a sixth-place finish in 2018, Barwon Heads co-coach Mitch Herbison climbed into the top five with 18 votes this year.

BFL: 2019 TEAM OF THE YEAR

After nine rounds before the counting of votes went live, Gleeson sat on 14, one clear of Meesen on 13, with Erskine, Williams and Torquay forward Paul McMahon two votes further back on 11.

Erskine then made his move with three consecutive best-on-ground performances in rounds, 10, 11 and 12 to open up a four-vote gap on Meesen.

However, the Modewarre big man’s final two outings of the season, in rounds 13 and 14, were both given the three votes by umpires to take him to 22.

Gleeson then produced two best-on-ground performances in rounds 15 and 16 to see him also overtake Erskine and join Meesen.

Gleeson is the fifth Tiger to win the BFL’s top honour, joining Mark Browne (1986), Chris Haddock (1990-91), George Arnold (1998) and James Darke (2014, 2017).

Meesen is only the second Warrior to claim the award after good mate and four-time winner Josh Finch (2010, 2012-13, 2016)
