MODEWARRE has received a massive boost as it looks to open its 2021 account on Saturday with Matt Farrelly to return to the line-up.

The former Geelong VFL star was unavailable for last week’s opening-round loss to Anglesea, but coach Chris Hickey confirmed Farrelly would be right to take on Newcomb in Round 2.

“He’s a pretty experienced player at Modewarre, so we’ll be looking forward to getting Matt back,” Hickey said.

“He can play back, he can play in the midfield, and he brings a lot of intensity to the game as well.

“He’s been at Modda for a while now, and he knows the way we play, and he’s good at directing traffic.

“There’s a lot of facets of the game that Faz is good at, and players like that, you certainly do miss them.”

After falling behind by the best part of seven goals early in the third quarter against Anglesea, the Warriors came storming home to finish just six points shy of the Roos.

Hickey, in his first game in charge, was left to rue lapses in concentration from his charges during the first two-and-half quarters.

“There were probably three or four periods of five minutes,” he said.

“I’ve looked at a bit of vision, and I could probably put it down to some lapses in a little bit of concentration more than anything.”

Hickey also believes the addition of 14 new or returning faces to the Modewarre line-up had an impact.

“If you want to put it into perspective, regardless of how many practice matches you play, we’ve only got limited time in how much we can train,” he said.

“I still think we can take a lot out of it.

“We just had periods where we dropped off a little bit and didn’t play exactly the way we wanted to play all of the time.

“It was disappointing, but we’re starting to learn a bit more about each other, too.

“We may take a little while to jell, but I think when we do, and we can do it on a more consistent basis, I think our best will be good.”
