Ex-Heads coach to lead Port

PORTARLINGTON has turned to former Barwon Heads coach Peter O’Connor to continue the rebuild of the Bellarine club.

The appointment of O’Connor, who spent three years as coach of the Seagulls, taking it to a finals appearance in 2014, was finalised on Monday night.

Jamie Morgan, who was installed as caretaker coach following Jesse Smith’s mid-season departure, will remain as an assistant coach.

O’Connor most recently was an assistant to Andrew Hodgson and Jono Casey at Queenscliff, while also having roles with Essendon and District league club Strathmore and VAFA clubs Power House, North Old Boys and St Bernard’s.

The Demons also confirmed the addition of local football icon Geoff Miles as Football Manager.

Miles, who played VFL/AFL with Collingwood, West Coast and Geelong, was a premiership player with Barwon Heads in 1993 before becoming a key figure off the field at the Seagulls, including a stint as president.

“Peter brings a strong focus on stabilising the football department, development and player recruitment to the club, and is looking forward to getting started,” a statement from Portarlington said.
