Dom named top coach

DOM Gleeson has been further honoured for guiding Torquay to the 2017 BFL premiership after being named the AFL Barwon Coaches’ Association’s Senior Coach of the Year.

In his third year in charge of the Tigers, Gleeson has taken out the Peter Burke Award ahead of fellow nominees Rowan McSparron (Geelong Amateur), Mitch Herbison and Bobby Wallace (Barwon Heads), Peter Riccardi (Bannockburn) and Troy Mitchell (St Mary’s).

As well taking Torquay to its first flag since 2006, the former Werribee and Geelong VFL star was named coach of the BFL Coaches’ Team of the Year last month.

Meanwhile, Alvie’s John Robb (Youth), Ocean Grove’s Tanya Taylor (Female), South Barwon’s Darren Meadows (Junior) and Bannockburn’s Tom Stanford (Auskick) have taken out the other coaching categories.

The John Edsall Award for outstanding contribution to football administration has been won by outgoing Lara president Gerard Evans, while the Leon Schram Award for outstanding service to to junior football has gone to Peter Hickey from the Colac & District Football League.
