Demons defy history

IT was the result that shocked the local football world, but Portarlington coach Jesse Smith says he was “not surprised at his team’s upset six-point win over BFL powerhouse Geelong Amateur.

Before Saturday’s meeting at Ron Evans Oval, the Demons had never beaten Ammos since the Queen’s Park-based club entered the competition in 1995, with a draw in Round 9 of that season the closest they had been.

However, Smith maintained belief his team was improving despite hidings from Newcomb and Barwon Heads after the interleague break.

“We’ve been thereabouts in games for a quarter or a half, sometimes even three quarters,” he told K rock’s The Wash-Up.

“I knew if we could put in a consistent four-quarter effort, we would knock over a good side eventually, and I’m just rapt it was yesterday.”
