AFTER 18 months turning around Portarlington’s off-field fortunes, the club’s first female president has stepped down from the role.

In a surprise move, Linda Shaw, who took on the role following the resignation of Andrew Aquilina due to work commitments in April 2019, didn’t seek reelection at the Demons’ AGM on Sunday morning.

Shaw said in a statement on Portarlington’s Facebook page that she was leaving the role with a “heavy heart”.

“Being the first female president has been an honour and a privilege and I hope this helps in some small way to encourage more females to take up roles within a sporting club environment,” she wrote.

“Whilst I leave not fully achieving all the things I would have liked to in my time, I am satisfied I have left the club in the best position it has ever been financially, structurally and connected to the community.
“I am proud that my team and I have been able to take the club from the brink of closure and in serious debt, survived a season crippled by Covid, and have come out the other side completely debt-free and with $60,000 in the bank without any money needing to be spent to start the 2021 season.”
It is understood the president’s role remains vacant following the AGM, as does that of secretary and treasurer.
