TORQUAY and Modewarre will open the 2018 BFL season in what is believed to be the first Good Friday match in the competition’s history.

AFL Barwon has confirmed the Tigers requested the chance to play on the Christian Holy Day, with Modewarre the Warriors this morning.

“It was seen by AFL Vic as a good fit with the crowds that get down there with the Rip Curl (Pro) event,” AFL Barwon Operations Manager Michael Limb said.

“They see it as a good opportunity to showcase football on the coast.”

Torquay and Modewarre have been regular rivals on Easter Saturday in recent years.

“And have had reciprocal arrangements later in the season where Torquay agree to play a Sunday game at Modewarre to give them a captive audience on standalone game,” Limb said.

It is planned to be part of a massive weekend of action on the Surf Coast, with the Geelong Falcons a chance to play that night under lights and the Geelong VFL and VFLW teams mooted to return to Spring Creek Reserve on Easter Sunday.

However, krockfootball.com.au understands both the VFL and VFLW would be dependent on fixturing.

Last year’s Round 1 clash between the Cats and Werribee, where the Tigers were the home team, was played on April 16, which was Round 4 of the AFL season.

On that same day the VFLW Cats started their practice match series ahead of their inagural season starting on May 6.

MEANWHILE, Drysdale and Portarlington may have found a unique way to continue their ANZAC Day rivalry.

With April 25 falling on a Wednesday next year, the Hawks and the Demons have asked AFL Barwon to fixture their return clash for the following Saturday but the match be transferred and played during the July bye.

GFL clubs South Barwon and St Joseph’s also have a similar issue.

It is understood the Swans have requested playing the following round before the season begins, similar to 2017 when it met St Albans a week before Round 1.
