250 for Finch

ON the eve of his 250th game for Modewarre, Josh Finch has spoken openly about the time he told the club he was headed elsewhere.

The only four-time winner of the Ash medal as the BFL’s best-and-fairest, Finch spent the pre-season of 2014 training with GFL club South Barwon while trying to win a spot on Geelong’s VFL list.

“I told ‘Fitzy’ (president Michael Fitzgerald) that year I was going to go,” he said.

“Then it just got to the point where we lost too many other soldiers, and I felt obligated (to stay).

“And I got advice off a few players that rather than chasing a premiership, try and fight for one at my home club.

“Reflecting on it now, the way last year panned out, I’m forever grateful that I did stay and listen to that advice.”

For his loyalty, Finch was rewarded by co-coaching Modewarre to its first BFL senior premiership alongside great mate John Meesen in 2018.

However, despite it being a glaring omission from his football resume until last year, Finch says he had stopped being hung up on winning a premiership.

“I was at that point where I wanted to win one so bad up until I was about 30.

“Then, when I was coaching the last couple of years, I let go of it a little bit thinking “it’s not going to happen”.

“It relieved a little bit of pressure as a coach, and it relieved a little bit of pressure as a player just to go out there and go about my business and be the best person I could be.”

When Finch runs out against Queenscliff at Community Bank Oval on Saturday afternoon, he’ll become just the 11th Warrior to play 250 games.

However, he’s unsure whether he’ll join Paul Meesen, Terry Morter, Steve Cassidy and Michael Wood in the 300 club.

“The body feels good at the moment, but I’m playing every game as though it’s my last,” Finch said.

“You just never know. You’re one injury and that’s it at this point of your career. I reckon this might be my last milestone, I honestly do.

“But, who knows? The body feels really good, and I’m playing a slightly different role this year that’s allowing me to be a bit fresher in games.

“If I play a different role, I could maybe get to 300.

“But, at this stage, it’s just one week at a time.”
