AFL Barwon stands down staff

AFL Barwon has stood down all but three of its eleven staff members as part of a restructure of its operations during the postponement of local football and netball during the COVID-19 crisis.

Region General Manager Will McGregor, Commercial Partnership Manager Georgia Hillman and Football Manager Sean Atkinson have been retained on a part-time basis.

The AFL Barwon office has been closed and that trio will work remotely.

“I am so proud of our team and the work we do, which has made these necessary steps extremely hard,” McGregor said in an open letter to the local football and netball community.

“We all have a role to play in stopping the spread of the COVID-19 virus and while we all love football and netball, the health of the Victorian community is our priority.”

McGregor said AFL Barwon will aim to maintain constant communication with clubs and participants.

Our leagues and clubs are the lifeblood of our game and we are committed to continuing to provide regular updates to you all.

“It is an extremely challenging period for our sports and our people,” McGregor wrote.

“It will take time and some extraordinary amounts of hard work, but we are up for it.

“We will bounce back, and we will be there with you.”

The measures at AFL Barwon aren’t as drastic taken at AFL Goldfields earlier this week.

All staff were stood down and the Ballarat and Melton offices closed, with one re-deployed as part-time operations manager of the Ballarat Football League.
