AFL Barwon expands mental health support for clubs

FIVE clubs in the AFL Barwon region will take part in a new mental health training program aimed at community football clubs and coaches.

Backed by the AFL Players’ and Coaches associations, Tackle Your Feelings (TYF) was developed to provide coaches with the tools to understand, recognise and manage signs of mental health issues.

BFL clubs Drysdale and Newcomb, GFL pair St Mary’s and South Barwon, and Birregurra from the Colac league are confirmed participants as part of the partnership.

Geelong Falcons Girls coach Brendan McCartney has been appointed as the facilitator.

“The TYF program will be a great tool for our community clubs and coaches to utilise,” AFL Barwon Region General Manager Will McGregor said.

“The mental health space is something we have invested in, and we’ve been in constant contact with TYF.

“We will continue to put time into this space, following our corporate social responsibility and feedback from our stakeholders.

“AFL Barwon has been long-time backers of mental health support, including a long-standing partnership with Read The Play, and more recently with Beyond Blue.

“We will continue to work closely with both these organisations going forward, and we see the TYF program complementing and supporting both organisations and all of our clubs in this area.”

Programs will also be run for all other clubs, while coaches can access TYF’s online platform when they register as a coach via CoachAFL.
